# How Better Organization Leads to Better Business Planning

When you’re running a business, there’s always something that needs to get done. You have the things you need to handle today, bigger goals you’re working toward, ideas you want to try, and plenty of unexpected things that come up along the way.

It can be easy to stay busy without really knowing if the things you’re doing are actually getting you closer to where you want your business to go.

As a professional organizer and small business owner, I’ve learned that being organized can make a big difference in how you plan and run your business. When you know what you want to accomplish and have a clear idea of what needs to happen to get there, it’s much easier to figure out what you should be working on.

### Know What You’re Working Toward

It’s hard to make a plan if you don’t have a clear idea of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Maybe you want to grow your revenue, hire someone, offer a new service, expand into another area, or simply get better at managing everything you already have going on.

Start by getting those goals out of your head and writing them down. Then decide which ones are actually important right now.

You can have ten things you eventually want to do with your business, but trying to work on all ten at once usually means you don’t make much progress on any of them.

### Break Your Goals Down

Once you know what you want to accomplish, figure out what actually has to happen to make it possible.

If your goal is to hire another employee, for example, there are probably quite a few steps involved. You need to figure out what you need help with, what you can afford to pay, where you’re going to find candidates, how you’ll interview them, and how you’ll train them once they’re hired.

Breaking a bigger goal into smaller pieces makes it feel much more manageable. More importantly, it gives you something specific to work on instead of having “hire someone” sitting on your to-do list for six months.

### Figure Out What Needs to Happen First

Once you have those smaller steps, put them in some kind of order.

Some things need to happen before you can move on to the next step. Other things might not be as important as they seemed when you first wrote them down.

This is where being organized really helps. You can look at everything you need to do and decide what actually deserves your attention first.

There will always be more things you _could_ be doing in your business. Having a plan helps you focus on the things that are going to move you closer to your goals.

### Make Time to Actually Do It

A good plan doesn’t help much if you never have time to work on it.

Once you know what needs to get done, make room for those things in your schedule. Maybe that means setting aside a couple of hours every week to work on the business instead of just working in it. It could also mean setting deadlines or giving certain responsibilities to someone else on your team.

The important part is making sure your bigger goals don’t keep getting pushed aside because something more immediate came up.

### Get Organized With the Things You Do Every Day

Organization can also make the everyday side of running a business much easier.

Think about the things you do over and over again. Maybe it’s responding to new leads, onboarding clients, scheduling appointments, sending invoices, ordering supplies, or following up after a job.

If you have to figure out how to do those things from scratch every single time, you’re probably making more work for yourself than you need to.

Having simple systems, templates, checklists, and designated places for important information can save a surprising amount of time.

### Your Physical Space Matters Too

Being organized in business isn’t only about your calendar or your to-do list. Your physical workspace can make a difference too.

As a professional organizer, I see this all the time. When paperwork is piled everywhere, supplies don’t have a designated place, or you’re constantly looking for something you know you have somewhere, those little interruptions eat into your day.

Your office doesn’t have to be perfectly organized. It just needs to work for you.

Keep the things you use most often easy to reach. Give important paperwork and supplies a place to go. Get rid of things you don’t need taking up valuable space.

The easier your workspace is to use, the easier it is to sit down and actually get things done.

### Check In on Your Progress

Your business is going to change, so your plan probably will too.

Every so often, look at the goals you set and see where you are. What have you finished? What keeps getting pushed back? Is the goal still important? Is there something else that should be a bigger priority now?

You don’t have to stick to a plan just because you made one. The point of having a plan is to give yourself direction, not lock yourself into something that no longer makes sense.

### Give Yourself a Clearer Path Forward

Being organized isn’t going to magically make every business goal happen. There will still be busy weeks, unexpected problems, and plans that don’t work out the way you thought they would.

But when you’re organized about what you want to accomplish, you know what needs to get done and what steps you need to take to get there.

And instead of constantly wondering what you should be working on next, you have a much clearer path forward.
